But first, how valuable is this overview effect for people to connect ideas and create understanding? My co-founders and I simply found a way to make it accessible for people with computers and a creative idea they wanted to share - more on this towards the end of this post. Related techniques for the mind in meditation and mnemonics can be traced back to ancient times. However, you don’t have to travel to space to have these kinds of experiences. The astronauts who have been able to look back and see the whole earth as a blue dot swimming in the vastness of empty space have experienced a deep sense of interconnectedness that has been dubbed “ the overview effect”. One of the clearest examples is space flight. The ability to zoom out is a magical tool for people to see how things connect. In 2008 my co-founders Adam Somlai-Fischer, Peter Halacsy, and I set out to create a visualization tool to reveal the interconnectedness of people’s ideas and by extension help, people better understand each other.
Uncovering the value of better understanding What I see before me is one of the fastest-growing video tools on the planet and a leader in Jim who has proven he can translate Prezi’s language to the mainstream. My measure of that was 1) strong growth ahead based on new products and 2) leader and leadership team who will scale the company in the mass market while embracing the culture across San Francisco, Budapest, Riga and Berlin. In the next chapter of my life, I’ll be integrating the two.īefore making any changes in my career however, I owed it to my Prezi team, investors, and myself to know that the company was ready. I have pushed this through two vectors, entrepreneurship, and activism. Over my life, I have been drawn to help people see our connectedness and develop our capacity to understand each other better. Seeing how my parents struggled a lifetime to fit in as Hungarian immigrants in Sweden and as a gay man who grew up in a Sweden prior to the LGBT+-rights breakthrough, I have experienced being treated as less-than and I have felt called to challenge our prevailing narratives about what we value and not.
Like many founders, I have a passion to be the change that I have wanted to see in the world.
I made this decision after 12 transformative years and this post is about my main learning. I’ll stay with Prezi as Executive Chair supporting Jim and our incredible team. From tomorrow, I have asked our President and my trusted business partner, Jim Szafranski, to become CEO at Prezi. I’m delighted to share some important news about Prezi and me.
